STILL FILTHY - 209
By Jarrod Tallman
Still Filthy, Billabong’s ambitious 21-years-in-the-making sequel
to Filthy Habits “These guys rip and give us a chance to really
show this medium.” Andy Irons eloquently added: “We all like to
get filthy once in awhile. Still Filthy for life! Features Andy Irons,
Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, to name a few. When it’s done well
and it’s got a good story, it’s really epic to watch. There was a
generation of surf films that followed real closely after Filthy
Habits, like Taylor Steele’s Focus, which had the same formula,
just music and action. But as a whole, the films shifted a little bit
towards documentaries and stories and whether cool to watch,
it’s not exactly the type of thing you gonna put on and say: “I’m
going surfing!” Hopefully this is what Still Filthy will do. Some of
the guys are Andy Irons, Taj Burrow, Parko plus Wade Goodall,
who is pretty known in Australia but over here he doesn’t get the
same media coverage yet. I think it’s cool that people will get
exposed to him (through this film) because his style is pretty
sick and he’s definitely a really talented surfer. There’s also
Laurie Towner, Sterling Spencer, Granger Larsen… It’s cool that
some of those really good younger guys are getting some
attention too.

SHAPED - 2009
By WALTER GEORIS
This documentary film pays tribute to the men and women of
the surf world that were there in the 1960s, working in the
trenches, creating and un-knowingly shaping the future of
surfing as we know it today. This handful of influential
innovators had no idea at the time how their work would
change the lives of millions of people through their
innovative thinking and commitment to their craft.
THE ARENA
In the world of sports, there is a point in every young athletes
career when they will be tested both physically and mentally
to see if they are among the elite to make it into the
professional arena. In surfing, the battleground lies on the
North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, where surfers from all over the
world come to claim supremacy in the sport of surfing. Every
winter on the seven mile stretch on North Shore Oahu, the
best surfers in the world come to charge the infamous Bonzai
Pipeline. It is on the deadliest wave in the world, where they
are met by media frenzy as they fight for the spotlight while
hundreds of cameras flash from ashore. Due to the massive
media hype, The Bonzai Pipeline has attracted the most
ambitious young surfers from all over the world. They have
come to prove their worthiness among the world’s best and to
gain massive media recognition. Bonzai Pipeline is the one
wave on the planet that can spring a young surfer’s career
into superstardom which is why it is commonly referred to as
“The Ultimate Proving Grounds.” While Pipeline will test these
aspiring surfers to see if they have the skill and mindset to be
among the best in the world, it is their fight to climb to the top
of the pecking order and charge one of the most dangerous
waves in the world that is the ultimate test.
Searching for Michael Peterson
Searching for Michael Peterson tells the moving story of one
of Australia's greatest surfers whose career was cut short by
mental illness. For five glorious years &MP´ led the
Coolangatta Kids and won virtually every event he contested,
including three Bells Beach Pros back to back. His brilliant,
aggressive surfing provided the centrepiece for Albert
Falzon's Morning of the Earth in 1972, and MP never looked
back. His final tour victory, at the inaugural Stubbies Pro at
Burleigh Heads in 1977, is regarded as the high point of the
early professional era. Sadly, a year later triumph turned to
tragedy and Michael's demons claimed him. In 1983 he was
locked up after a 15-car police chase across Queensland and
finally diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He never
surfed again. Thirty years on, MP is still vitally interested in
the sport and culture of surfing and is a fixture at most
Queensland events, enjoying the action with his mother, Joan.
He is rightly regarded as an iconic figure in Australian surfing,
and Hoff's film, while it pulls no punches, is an intensely
moving tribute to the man.
