Paul Harvey stopped by the museum last June and became a member, That isn't so unusual, unless you notice that he lives in Ohio and makes guitars. Then came his first email: "Thanks for taking the time to chat. I really enjoyed checking out the boards. I'm from Ohio so I'm still learning about surfing. I'm the guy from Storm Music Technologies. My partner and I created a line of really cool surfing guitars called the "Woodie '47 Acoustic" and the "Woodie '48 Electric," modeled after the Ford Woodie Wagon. Both guitars feature beautiful wood and inlays, chrome hardware, and sky blue tuning keys. Our guitars have received excellent reviews in the guitar trade mags." Pretty soon an unusual shaped package arrived on CSM's doorstep - and sure enough, it is an absolutely gorgeous electric guitar, natural wood finish with a bright orange stringer down the middle.
We are honored to have such a finely Grafted instrument in our collection, and humbled by Paul's generosity. Our plans are to contact the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad as to the possibility of officially introducing the guitar at a venue at their location, and of getting together some of surf music's legends to break it in. Perhaps Paul and his partner could make a special trip out for the occasion! We will keep you posted... More from Paul Harvey: "Our company is very small and free-spirited, and may be looking to relocate, possibly in Oceanside. My California Surf Museum sticker is on the back bumper of my pickup truck here in Ohio and a number of people have asked me about it. The colors really catch your attention."
Accompanying the guitar was a plaque which explained: "Woodie '48" Donated by Storm Custom Guitars. Woodie '48 hangs in honor of the venerable woodie wagon, the iconic automobile that dutifully transported a generation of surfers to their favorite beaches. Handcrafted from swamp ash, maple, birch and rosewood, the Woodie '48 vibe brings back the look, sound ; and history of our surfing way of life, Mahalo!" Check out our website for a really nice view of this incredible instrument, and check out www.indiestormguitars.com for more info about this fine company!
