The passing of a special friend.....

Woody Brown surfiing2WOODY BROWN 1912-2008

It is with a heavy heart here at CSM that we mourn the passing of a special friend, Woodbridge Parker Brown, better known as Woody Brown. We first met Uncle Woody at the San Diego premiere of the locally-produced film, Liquid Stage, when he had been flown out from Maui by a bunch of his old Windansea pals. There he was introduced to Faye Baird Fraser, San Diego’s first woman surfer. Woody asked Faye when she had taken up surfing and she answered, “1925.” He was blown away. “You beat me by 10 years,” he exclaimed. The two were seen talking animatedly throughout the rest of the evening.

Hot Curl Returns

HotCurl Returned

On Sunday, March 30, the noted artist and cartoonist Michael Dormer, creator of the beloved and zany ’60s surfing icon “Hot Curl.” Dormer "returned" the handcrafted, life-size “Spittin’ Image” of the famed statue originally erected in 1963 at Windansea beach. The Hot Curl Statue resides once more in the loving embrace of the California Surf Museum. See the video of the event hosted by The California Surf Museum posted to mysurftv.com.

BudBrownePhotos007BUD BROWNE HONORED ON MARCH 13

BudBrownePhotos002The small, sleepy college town of San Luis Obispo kicked it up a notch when a huge surf crowd turned out to honor early filmmaker Bud Browne on March 13. Perhaps 800 guests filled the downtown Fremont Theater to pay tribute to the 95-year-old surf movie pioneer. Filmmaker Jack McCoy, who had flown in from Australia, and legendary big-wave artist Peter Cole served as co-hosts for the evening, entertaining the audience with amazing stories throughout.

Thanks Tom Appreciation Thanks, Tom!
Tom Keck Appreciation
On Sunday, February 24th the museum gave a “thank you” reception to photographer Tom Keck for providing us with a terrific exhibit over the past year.
“Tom Keck: Expose d” is coming down in order to make room for our next scheduled display, “From The Bronze Mercury to SL8ER:A Glimpse of 100 Years of Surfing Culture in Southern California,” and so we gave Tom a special send-off.
Also on the guest list were all folks who purchased one or more of Tom’s images, as their sponsorship allowed us to defray some of the exhibit expenses and to put on a such a superb display.
Thank You Tom!

Book Signing at Hansens Surf Shop

Surfing In San DiegoAnother Party for “Surfing in San Diego!”
Click Here to go to the Picture gallery of the booksigning at Hansens
Hansen Surfboards in Encinitas experienced a reunion of sorts when dozens of longtime surfers and shapers gathered for the Dec. 8 booksigning. “Surfing in San Diego” co-authors John Elwell and Jane Schmauss were on hand to sign autographs, along with Woody Ekstrom, Tom Keck, and Lee Louis, who contributed many of the photo images. Everywhere one looked, people were busy signing their pictures in the popular book.

Hansen’s sold out of their book stock in a couple of hours, but spirits remained high as many in the crowd saw friends they hadn’t seen in 10, 20, 30 years. Many of Hansen’s top team surfers stopped by: L.J. Richards, Cheer Critchlow, Linda Benson, Mike Doyle and others. Rusty Miller, who sent his apologies from Australia, also sent several snapshots from the 60’s that were on prominent display. Memories were further jogged by Richard ‘Slick’ Dowdy’s unique photos, and Mike Burner’s blue Hansen Surf Team sweatshirt (1960’s).
Many thanks to Don Hansen (and Heidi) for hosting such a wonderful event. Hansen Surfboards has been a major supporter of CSM for several years.
