© 2012 California Surf Museum John lambs Secret spot at CSM Drop in on John Lamb’s creation: “Secret Spot” at the California Surf Museum! Walking out CSM’s back door into the permanent installation by Oceanside artist John Lamb, “Secret Spot” transports you to the middle of an amazing scene from an animated film. With John’s colorful images surrounding you on three sides, his trademark surfer is catching a huge wave, and the ocean water is lapping on the beach. A realistic looking rocky shore, complete with rock outcroppings for sitting, a sandy beach with foot prints, and ocean water you want to dip your toe in, are all created in concrete by Oceanside artist Brett Hazzard. This “Secret Spot” pays homage to John’s first animated film “Secret Spot,” produced in 1974. The original cartoon boasts the first aerial surf maneuver ever captured on film. This was followed by his second surf toon, featured in the iconic classic “5 Summer Stories.” John received an Academy Award in 1980 for scientific and technical achievement in animation. He also worked with Tom Waits on “Tom Waits for No One,” arguably the first rock video created for the burgeoning MTV music market. When at CSM, be sure to check out John’s art on a Hang Ten skateboard (and a cel from “5 Summer Stories”) on display in CSM’s temporary exhibit, “Sidewalk Surfers.” John’s work can also be seen on You Tube.
